The Garden’s Golden Glow

The Garden’s Golden Glow

See the sun descending towards the cloud speckled horizon,
Casting its golden glow of amber over my evening garden,
Illuminating hues not recognized during the daytime
When the light is so stark and a hat is needed for protection.

Hear the stillness rising as the rumblings of street traffic slowly subside,
Yielding to other diverse sounds of human activity at the end of the day…
People glad to be home after a hard week’s work, dogs barking, kids playing,
Neighbors on cell phones, John in his backyard talking to his dogs.

Yummm, smell the Friday evening smoky, meaty BBQ next door,
Reminding me of an earlier time when I frequently indulged in animal flesh
Seared by flames, dripping with juiciness, devoured by this woman carnivore.
We’ll grill some veggie kabobs instead, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with rosemary and thyme.

For desert we’ll enjoy the sweet taste of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries,
Mix them all together, add some sugar and bake a cobbler, blend a smoothie,
Stir up some freezer jam, or just eat them as is, stuffing handfuls into our mouths,
Enjoying the explosion of nutritious juices from nature’s sweetest harvest.

Feelings of gratitude and joy arise within me as I wander through my garden sanctuary,
In a contemplative trance I survey my day’s work, soaking in the colors,
The beauty, the diversity of nature’s bounty, experiencing a moment
Of ecstatic transcendence that reminds me of where I’ve been and where I’m going.

Thank you, God, the Universal spirit with whom I am one,
Thank you Earth Mother, for your sacred gifts of life and sustenance,
Thank you Moon and Stars as you appear before me reminding me of my ultimate home.
As we say goodbye to the sun and embrace the stillness of the night,
I head towards my back door and ascend the stairs for one last time.
